Karl came to this world the way he left his last job. Confused, and not drunk at all.
One queen, a grove full of murderous treemen, and a demon with very uncomfortable desires on Karl’s ribcage later, he has been promoted to garrison magus of a frontier fort most people run away from. The job came with a robe, a salary, and roughly one week’s worth of training.
Now there are goblins in the forest, a cult under the lake, and a ritual in the dark that no one is supposed to know about. And all Karl has is a few Words, none of them useful in a fight, a demon’s claws in his side, and a grove of murderous treemen who sometimes answer his summons.
The Queen has warned him. The demon has not. One day soon, one of them will own him.
