In Sigma, Bret Hunter is an IT engineer in contemporary Boston who dreams of changing his life. He lives in a cramped apartment with his beautiful, demure girlfriend Eva Ross. Circumstances arise that all but make their dreams come true, except that they erupt into a nightmarish reversal of fortune. At this point, it hasn’t been revealed that Bret and Eva are the future parents of Jason Hunter, the far flung future husband of Emma Winslow, a heroine in the previous series installment, The Garden Of Love And Peril.

An emergent pandemic in Boston and ensuing “vaccine mandates” convince Bret and Eva that the time is ripe for a move. They take the opportunity to emigrate and escape to a family apartment in Switzerland, soon after finding out that Eva is pregnant. She has the child, a boy named Jason, in Switzerland, but they fail to extend their visas in a timely manner, and are forced to move. They end up moving into another small apartment in London.

It seems like a temporary blip in their plans, until London explodes with a pre-engineered virus, a neurotoxin that transforms people into marauding, lethal “pagans.” Bret now discovers and fosters a new side of himself; a man that must fight to survive and defend his young family.

Meanwhile, the story jumps back in time to relate the struggles and affairs of Bret’s great-great-grandfather James Hunter and his wife Emmeline Kennedy, who suggest that willpower, strength, and physical immunity can be shared among forebears throughout several generations.
